2020 Ford F-150 vs 2020 Ram 1500

2020 Ford F-150 vs 2020 Ram 1500

The full-size pickup truck market is steadily increasing in competitive quality, with all the major manufacturers bidding to scale new heights in performance, capability, and comfort. Two of the biggest hitters in the segment remain the venerable Ford F-150, and the relative upstart Ram 1500.

With both models boasting a new 2020 release in Alberta showrooms, which of these two mighty trucks most deserve your money?

First Glances

The Ford's looks leave no doubt that it's a hard-working truck, with an exterior that's chunky, chiselled, and imposing. The Ram also looks the part, but it's a little softer around the edges, with a few more curves than angles.

Suffice to say, both models will have their devoted admirers, while looking very different at first glance.

Powertrain and Performance

Of far greater importance than looks is the engineering under the hood. At the base level, both trucks offer hefty V6 mills, with the Ram's output edging ahead at 305 horsepower compared to the Ford's 290hp.

However, the Ford offers two attractive options above the base level, with a 2.7L twin-turbo design producing 325 horsepower, or a juicy 5.0L V8 which pushes out a staggering 395 ponies.

Towing Capacity

All this potential power means that the Ford can haul a mighty 5,897kg behind it, making this a muscular truck indeed. The Ram lags behind slightly, with the most powerful configuration able to haul 5,783kg. To be fair, at this level of towing capability, the slight difference doesn't make much of an impact.

Cab Configurations

The Ford is available in a bewildering array of cab and bed configurations, but typical users will opt for either the base-level two-door Regular Cab, or move up to one of the larger cab options which offer plenty more space behind the four doors and seat up to six adults.

The Ram 1500 also has a two-door option, known as an Extended Cab, although again upgrading to a four-door cab is an obvious choice for any driver taking passengers onsite.

Interior and Technology

At the base level, the Ford's interior is functional, no more no less. Moving up the trims soon brings more comfort and a higher level of tech, but it still lags behind the Ram which is well equipped from the outset.

The 2020 Ford F-150 is the first release in the lineup's history to feature a touchscreen, and at 8" it's a perfectly acceptable design. The standard Ram touchscreen clocks in at a slightly larger 8.4", but more expensive models boost this to a genuinely impressive 12" offering.

It's perhaps debatable whether advanced infotainment is an essential feature in working vehicles like these two, but it's a sign of the high competition in the market that it's now becoming standard.
