Ford Taurus, Escape & Edge Are Voted the Safest, Most Reliable Used Cars for Under $20K

Buying a car for a young or inexperienced driver involves a lot to think about. Safety on the road is paramount, especially when a driver doesn't have the instincts developed over long experience to handle an emergency.

Reliability is also vital, as parents of vulnerable younger drivers don't want to see them stranded by the roadside thanks to a faulty vehicle.

A report addressing all these issues has been compiled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with the help of the non-profit advocacy organization Consumer Reports.

In the report, three models from Ford scored high enough to rank in the Best or Good sections, earning them a place on the list of safest and most reliable used cars for under $20k.

1) Ford Taurus

Although classed as a large car, the Ford Taurus lies at the more compact end of the range and offers a gentle but confident ride with no handling surprises. Given a full 5-star rating by the NHTSA, its excellent crash test results are backed up by a full set of advanced safety technologies, including forward collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alerts, and much more.

The Taurus benefits from Ford's huge experience in car making to offer reliable engineering, and the model includes an advanced SYNC 3 infotainment system which makes vital driving information available without being distracting.

2) Ford Escape

Moving into the SUV arena, the Ford Escape is backed by a long and successful sales history, meaning the underlying technology of this model is mature and reliable. The standard gas engine provides enough power to be controllable and confident, while the smooth eight-speed automatic transmission makes for an easy and consistent drive.

As with all recent Ford models, the Escape is exceptionally well equipped with safety technology. A major highlight is the electronically assisted steering, offering a special driving mode to make handling easier in slippery conditions.

However, the Escape also includes a blind spot information system, rear cross-traffic warnings, emergency braking, and much more.

3) Ford Edge

The Ford Edge is a consistent best seller in the mid-sized SUV market, offering an enviable combination of high-quality engineering, safe drivability, and value.

Like the Taurus, the Edge received a 5-star rating under NHTSA crash tests, offering excellent protection to occupants even under heavy front, side, and rear impacts.
