Big, brawny and altogether brilliant, Ford did a downright bang-up job with its full-size utility vehicle, the radically redesigned 2016 Explorer.

There are seemingly countless engine configurations within the Explorer catalog. And while the SUV segment is never known for first-rate fuel economy figures, there is one engine that's out to change that.

This turbo 2.3-liter four-cylinder, termed EcoBoost, is expected to achieve a very healthy 22 mpg combined (19 city/28 highway) when had in front-drive form. Add all-wheel drive to the mix and estimates drop only a smidge to 21 mpg combined (18 city/26 highway). You just can't lose with this smart gas-sipper.
